Perfectionsim & Achievement Pressure

Perfectionism is the tendency to set exceptionally high standards and be highly self-critical. It can also be accompanied by pressure to continually achieve, basing self-worth on accomplishments, and feeling guilty about relaxing. While these traits can contribute to success, they can also come at a great personal cost, such as anxiety, burnout, and procrastination. Despite outward success, some people continue to struggle with a persistent sense of never being quite “good enough” or find themselves disconnected from deeper meaning and purpose in life.

Therapy involves developing an understanding of the beliefs and experiences that underlie perfectionistic patterns and achievement pressure. For some people, these patterns developed in environments where academic and professional success were highly valued, or praise and attention felt conditional on performance. For others, perfectionism and achievement were attempts to control unpredictable environments or protect against criticism or feelings of inadequacy.

Therapy can help you to quieten your inner critic and learn to pursue your goals in ways that feel more balanced and intentional. It can also help you to develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself and experience greater fulfilment in life beyond achievement and accomplishments.
