Attachment and Relationship Issues
Our early attachment experiences and relationships can profoundly shape the way we connect with others in adulthood. When our early emotional needs are not consistently met, we may find it more difficult to form healthy and secure connections in adult relationships.
This may take the form of relationship anxiety, insecurity, or fear of abandonment. For others, it may look like difficulty trusting others, avoiding emotional closeness, or fear of commitment. Attachment difficulties can also contribute to recurring relationship patterns, such as being drawn to partners who are unable to meet our emotional needs or finding ourselves stuck in unhealthy relationship dynamics.
These patterns can feel deeply ingrained and difficult to change. Even when we recognise them intellectually and know what we would like to change, it can be difficult to respond differently in the moment or shift how we feel emotionally.
Schema Therapy and attachment-focused approaches can be especially effective for people experiencing longstanding difficulties in relationships and emotional connection. These approaches focus on understanding and healing the impact of early attachment experiences, allowing for deeper and more lasting emotional change. Therapy also provides a safe space to connect with your emotions and needs, learn how to express them in healthy ways, and build relationships that feel more secure, connected, and emotionally fulfilling.
